MI Cape Town (MICT) put on an incredible display on the first night of SA20 2025, defeating Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the two-time and reigning champions, by 97 runs to win by bonus points at Gqeberha. Although several players helped MICT win handily, none were more impressive than Delano Potgieter, who bowled out the reigning champions for just 77 runs with figures of 5 for 10. Following a pivotal 12-ball cameo of 25* that helped MICT to a competitive total of 174 on a challenging pitch, Potgieter delivered an outstanding bowling performance.

MICT’s Innings: Brevis and Potgieter Shine

Reeza Hendricks was removed on the fourth ball of the game, which gave MI Cape Town an early blow. MICT were called to bat first, and with Richard Gleeson and Liam Dawson taking quick wickets, they crept to 36 for two by the end of the PowerPlay and were shortly at 42 for 3.

Dewald Brevis took over at this stage, spearheading a comeback with a 67-run combination with seasoned Colin Ingram.

Ingram was more reserved, but Brevis launched a spectacular response, hitting six sixes in his scorching 29-ball 57. Join bet pro exchange for latest cricket news.

MICT lost a few fast wickets after this partnership ended, but Potgieter came through with a vital flourish at the finish, joining George Linde (23*) to add 42 runs in 21 balls. MI Cape Town ended their innings with a competitive 174/7 thanks to this partnership, which significantly increased their total.

The Battle of the Sunrisers: Potgieter and Boult Take the Lead

The chase by Sunrisers Eastern Cape got off to a terrible start. Trent Boult, a powerplay specialist, dismissed the English pair of Tom Abell and Zak Crawley with a spectacular double-wicket maiden in his second over.

Shortly after, Jordan Hermann was sent back to the pavilion by Azmatullah Omarzai, further cutting the Sunrisers to 16 for 3.

The Sunrisers’ batters could not handle the movement and fluctuating bounce of the pitch, which was providing the bowlers with plenty of help.

Sunrisers were struggling at 49 for four at the 10-over stage, and it was obvious that their chase was failing. During the second half of the innings, Potgieter was added to the attack and quickly made an impression.

In the same dramatic over, he dismissed South Africa internationals David Bedingham and Aiden Markram after cleaning up Beyers Swanepoel with a yorker on his first delivery. Potgieter extended his outstanding run of form by dismissing Liam Dawson.

He finished his incredible display by dismissing Gleeson with his 18th ball, guaranteeing that Sunrisers were bowled out for just 77 with five complete overs remaining.

Final Scorecard

MI Cape Town: 174/7 in 20 overs (Delano Potgieter 25*, Dewald Brevis 57, Richard Gleeson 2-22)
Sunrisers Eastern Cape: 77 in 15 overs (Trent Boult 2-16, Delano Potgieter 5-10)
Result: MI Cape Town won by 97 runs.

Potgieter’s all-around skill was essential in establishing a challenging goal and destroying the Sunrisers’ batting lineup in this thrilling victory for MI Cape Town.

MICT will try to capitalize on this resounding win as the competition goes on. Meanwhile, the Sunrisers will have to get back together and win their upcoming games.
