Before you hire an eCommerce SEO agency, it’s worth it to do a little homework since the investment is going to be significant.

Here’s a relatively comprehensive checklist that you should follow before you hire any agency.

  • Make sure the eCommerce SEO agency in question shows up in the organic search results. You do not want to hire an agency that does not show up in the organic search results because that is literally what they’re selling.

  • If the agency is running ads that is somewhat of a red flag. If the agency sells other marketing services, or design, development, or consulting services, that’s one thing. But an eCommerce SEO company should not be promoting its SEO services with paid ads. That’s just a perversion of reason.

  • The agency in question must serve your industry, specifically. In order to effectively deliver SEO services, the agency must have some expertise with your industry, products, voice, and target market. It’s highly risky to hire an eCommerce SEO agency that doesn’t have demonstrated experience delivering to clients in your vertical.

  • The agency website should have a client portfolio with real examples. If you can see real work performed for past clients, that should lower the risk of hiring; at least you’ll know better what you’re getting into.

  • Case studies that contain data as well as information about strategy offer serious value to you as a shopper. In terms of promotional materials, case studies with actual data, that showcase keywords targeted, impressions and clicks gained, and growth in conversions and sales are just about the best thing out there.

  • The company should be able to furnish you with references in your vertical. Since the agency should have served clients in your industry, it shouldn’t be too big of a deal for the company to come up with references for you.

  • The company should have a business history of greater than 10 years. Every agency has to get a start somewhere, but one with a history in excess of 10 years will show that they were able to maintain and adjust operations even through several major Google updates.

  • Don’t just rely on reviews that show up on the company website; look for disinterested third-party testimonials. Reviews are one thing but they can be biased. When you really want to know what it’s like to work with a company, make sure you solicit reviews that are published on third-party websites and sources where a bias is less likely.

  • Have the agency run an audit on your website and make sure they do it for free. If the agency isn’t willing to run a free SEO agency, move on; otherwise, this will show you where your website is lacking and what changes if any need to be made.

  • Make sure you’ve delivered a scope of work before you sign anything. There are over 200 ranking factors in SEO, so knowing which ones the agency intends to address is vital to success.

  • Ask questions about deliverables, since some agencies treat SEO like smoke and mirrors. Make no assumptions about what work you will receive and when. Make sure it is spelled out, as well as what the value of each deliverable to the performance of the campaign really is.
