Some golfers need the lowest-launching, lowest-spinning drivers they can get their hands on, mated to the stiffest, most uncompromising shafts available.
Other golfers, not so much. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been playing for years and are just noticing that your swing speed is beginning to flag a bit, there are times when higher launch is preferable.
On that note – regardless of the reasons for it – PING’s HL sets offer quite a bit of value. Here’s a snapshot of what they can do.
Why High Launch?
In addition to staples like the PING G440 MAX and G430 MAX, PING Golf has also curated HL, or High Launch sets, which include special high-launching drivers, fairways, hybrids, and irons.
The drivers included in these HL sets feature lighter back weights, lowering overall swing weight, along with special PING driver shafts (more on that below) and lighter grips.
As for their HL fairways and hybrids, the fairways are made with aluminum weights (which are, again, lighter) along with special shafts and grips. Their hybrids also sport lighter aluminum weights, grips and shafts.
As for their HL irons, they are also made with lighter toe and tip weights, which keeps the overall swing weight down, along with special grips and lighter weight iron shafts.
About the PING Golf Driver Shafts and Grips Paired with Them
Two of the big elements that drive performance in PING HL sets are the PING golf driver shafts and grips that are paired with them, which help you wring a little more consistency, speed, control, and ultimately distance, out of these clubs.
First, the HL drivers are equipped with PING Alta Quick shafts, which some golfers have noted have similar bend profiles to comparable Autoflex golf shafts.
Of course, this doesn’t even mention the fact that these shafts are considerably more cost-effective than Autoflex golf shafts, which currently cost, and have cost, a pretty penny since they were released.
Ultimately, they help launch a bit higher – in keeping with the “HL” designation – enabling you to get a few more yards from each swing without making any big compromises anywhere else.
These PING golf driver shafts are also remarkably lightweight, which helps keep the overall swing weight to a minimum so you can extract more performance from your swing.
The HL clubs in these sets are also equipped with Lamkin UTx Lite grips, the brand’s lightest and therefore fastest grips. These grips offer a secure connection to the shaft and thereby excellent control and consistency, in addition to being lightweight.
What PING HL Sets Offer
It’s impossible to remove the pairings of the grips and shafts mated to these clubs from the overall performance they offer, but as a general rule, these clubs are lighter and faster than others in the PING family.
This enables golfers to produce higher clubhead speed for greater overall carry distance without making any other big compromises on performance.
They’re also optimized to produce higher launch profiles, hence the name, which also positively influences carry distance, helping golfers with slightly slower swing speeds to drive farther with less effort, improving upon their existing skill sets.
Still Have Questions?
Not sure if any of the clubs in PING’s HL sets are for you? Wondering if there are better shafts out there for these clubs, but appreciate the lightweight performance of the clubs themselves?
