Some prepper supplies are highly specialized and only useful for one or a few things. Take, for instance, matches; they’re great for lighting fires and will never leak fuel, but that’s realistically all you can do with them.
Does that mean your survival pack or bug-out bag should not have matches? Absolutely not; it should.

Vaseline
Widely available at basically any convenience store, grocery store or big box retailer, Vaseline, more properly known as petroleum jelly, has an enormous amount of daily and survival use cases.

- It can also be used to seal small scrapes and cuts, not just to encourage healing, but to prevent infection.

Duct Tape
Like Vaseline, duct tape is widely available, highly affordable, and has tons of use cases. Here are some of the best of them:

- Duct tape can be woven into cordage, offering you the flexibility to use rope where you have none.
- Like Vaseline, duct tape is flammable and can help you get a fire going in a pinch.
- Applied to sensitive areas, duct tape can help prevent or alleviate hot spots and blisters.
- It can be used as a quick fix to address leaking pipes and hoses.
- With a little skill, duct tape can be used to create baskets, bags and other vessels.
Salt
Salt is an essential nutrient; you literally need it to live. It also has a wide range of survival uses:
- Nearly any savory dish can be made infinitely better with just a pinch of salt.
- Salt can be used as a topical disinfectant since it kills most bacteria and parasites.
- You can use it to cure meats and other foods, improving safety and helping to prevent spoilage.
- In the garden, salt can be used to control weeds like poison ivy, as well as to keep pests, like slugs and snails, away.
- Salt can be used as a mild abrasive to remove rust and stains from metal and other surfaces. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse and dry the surface after use.
High-Proof Ethyl Alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol is highly useful, but it’s toxic if ingested. High-proof ethyl (or ethanol) is much more utilitarian. It also has many uses, including:
- It is an excellent topical disinfectant.
- It is highly flammable and burns cleanly, so it can be used as a fuel in small stoves.
- It can be used to sterilize surfaces, and it is a highly effective solvent that can be used as a cleaner on a wide range of soils.
- It is an effective hand sanitizer.
- It can be used to help extract essential oils from herbs, and used as a tincture.
