Camo cargo shorts might seem like a sort of quandary. Hunters have little need for them because they leave their lower legs exposed. Outdoor sportsmen like airsofters and paintballers can’t use them for the same reason, on top of the fact that shorts don’t protect the lower legs.

That leaves fashion as the sole legitimate reason for the purchase (or wearing) of camo shorts, and to do that effectively, you need to have a plan for how to wear them. Worry not; you need not consult the articles of a haute couture magazine. Here are 3 ways you can style with some camo shorts that won’t make you stick out like a highlighter (ironically, camo can do that).

With a Plain White (or Black) Shirt

One of the most toned-down and dignified ways to wear a pair of camo cargo shorts is under a plain white tee.

Camo produces a lot of vibrant movement, especially against an urban backdrop. While it can blend into foliage, most camo patterns actually highlight, rather than obscure, the wearer when the background is not natural.

As a result, you may feel it looks best when a little bit muted. Wearing a plain white shirt will add a bit of contrast while softening the impression of camouflage.

White, however, is a bit bright, and some wearers might prefer a plain black shirt with camo cargo shorts, which will basically produce the same effect, but in a more toned-down, dignified manner.

Either way, this is similar to wearing a camo jacket over jeans or khakis, except in this reverse case, it’s the jacket that produces intrigue and the pants that soften the hard edges.

With a Graphic Tee

After the last suggestion, we know what you might be thinking, but allow for a short explanation.

Yes, a graphic tee will produce a lot of motion and color, and yes, it is possible that it could clash with camo cargo shorts. So our caveat here is that not any graphic tee will work.

You’ll want to stick with graphics that are simple and only use a few colors, as well as those that don’t have too much going on. If the graphic is too involved it likely will clash with the camo.

Also, all else being equal, muted colors are better than brighter colors as brighter colors can create a contrast with the camo that is too harsh.

Match with a Hat with Camo Cargo Shorts

If you’re the type that wears hats, here’s one area in which you can coordinate with the camo pattern you’ve chosen in your pants.

Simply get a ball cap in the same camo pattern and color scheme as your shorts and it will create visually pleasing alignment between the elements of your attire.
